This is quite possibly a very dangerous statement to make - but, so far as I can tell, I have *never* been infected with a virus.

The nearest I've been is when I was warned not to visit a certain website by McAfee - so, of course, I did - and the webpage tried to download a virus onto my PC, which was caught. I haven't visited since. Smiley

Of course, I don't open unauthorised attachments, and I run most of my mail through Hotmail anyway - which uses an anti-virus guard to screen all attachments anyway. Smiley

Has anyone here got any horror stories about being infected? Or have most people got away without being infected so far?

Sometimes my desktop computer goes so screwy that I think there must be a colony of viruses in it! Even when I run my virus guard program theres nothing. Is there software for gremlins?

LOL! I almost spoke too soon! This afternoon my Hotmail box was suddenly dangerously filled - by bounced e-mails spoofed from one of my domains (I redirect most post to a Hotmail account), and all apparently caused by the acitivities of the MyDoom B virus:

More than a little disturbing that one of my domains is being spoofed - but luckily it's only a minor one. And, of course, I did not download any of the attachments. Smiley

Been infected by 2 viruses in the last 10 years that I can remember - one from a shareware disk which was quickly removed and the "form" virus from somewhere which seems to knock out the CD drive and thats about it.

Stay away from Outlook Express or similar and you should be pretty safe from the majority of new viruses/worms at least.

For those too young to remember shareware disks (the virus breeding ground of their day) I'll post a separate message...

Actually...I used to make a point of using Hotmail specifically because of the security issues of Outlook Express...but now I find myself using it for at elast certain mail. You've just made me a little edgy. Sad

I used to use Hotmail mainly for anything where I thought there would be spam coming (and it worked very well), but even their virus checking didn't always work. Not sure if they use someone different now, but they had McAfee at one time and I still got a series of worms through (luckily identified by by AV software).

With Outlook Express security can be tricky, although I think if you turn off the preview thingy that at least gives you a chance of spotting them before they infect everything.

Just having a look through the settings of OE 6 at least under Tools > Options:

- Read tab:
"Read all messages in plain text" should protect you from most worms although doesn't work so well if people insist on sending you HTML e-mails.

- Send tab:
"Mail sending format - Plain Text". Just a quick plea for all OE users to set this for the sanity of those of us who don't use OE. Smiley

- Security tab:
"Restricted zone sites" is definitely the option to have selected which at least protects you to a greater degree. Also there seem to be a couple of other options on there related to viruses....OE being virus aware, whatever next!? Wink
(Pity it doesn't appear to be working too well judging by the number of My Doom viruses)

I'd also go into IE > Tools > Internet Options > Security > Restricted Sites > Custom Level button

...set everything to either "disabled" or "prompt" as I seem to remember the defaults there aren't all that secure and thats what Outlook Express will be using for its security checks.

Apart from that, just make sure you've got a good anti-virus product, eg: Norton which scans the mail as it arrives/leaves.

And so ends Dr. Trev's "How to bolt down OE" tutorial...

PS: Being edgy is the best form of defence.
PPS: Theres an even safer way to do things, don't use OE! Smiley
