When does the size of a page really matter? Should I aim at low file sizes or just overall low page size? And what about indexing? Is there a best size for webpages?

As a rule of thumb, you should ensure that pages remain under 100k, and have no more than 100 links on any one page - for the concerns of google at least. Smiley

With regards to human users - well, really, try and keep file sizes to a minimum - less is absolutely best. What annoys myself is when designers insist on filling sites with Flash, when the broadband market still has less than 20% of all surfers. Especially when there is no "skip intro2 link".

I would stress the importance of having a fast-loading homepage. This is where new visitors are  generally going to be landing.  Aim for a total file size of less than 30k. Restrict the number of graphics, and make sure they're well optimised. The page should load in 10 secs or less on a 56k dialup connection.
Once you have the visitor interested, then you can provide more graphic intensive pages as they explore deeper into your site.

 Hope that helps!

Quick loading on the pages is very important.  I've actually heard it said that you have just 8 seconds to catch a visitor's attention, which you can't do if your site is not loaded yet.

Small file size = quick load time.

And remember, 40% of all internet users are still on dial-up.

I use this free tool to check my website speed -- http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/

emm...I just tested my site with the tool provided in the link. Results are mixed, but these areas really concerned me :-
Quote
#  TOTAL_OBJECTS - Warning! The total number of objects on this page is 41 - consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your external objects. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests.
# TOTAL_IMAGES - Warning! The total number of images on this page is 32 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your graphics. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests.

Any help and guide on how to trouble shoot it?
Thanks greatly!

Thanks Pamil for your kind guides so far.
Ok, I re-loo my site, it is actually a support forum for my members ( SuggestionSite.com ) . I actually revamped it from an article directiry into current current support forum.

In trying to do some traffic exchange, I put quite a number of banners for other sites. I believe these banners has actually been dragging down my site's loading time. By hey, they are giving me some little traffic....so I am in little dilemma  Roll Eyes

Looking at my site :-
1. If the forum is active --> meaning members using my service are having problems everywhere, which means my service is not really good!  Angry
2. If the forum is inacctive --> meaning members are happy using my service and encountered no problem at all!  Grin

So..it is kind of irony isn't it??!

Yeap. Funny... But hey, if you are doing fine, that's the most important part.
About those banners though... hm  Undecided I wouldn't count on them so much.

Hi,
I have finally removed majority of those banners on my forum sites. I am now concentrating to build-up and expand my whole network. I think this should be the direction for my sites, instead of hoping to get traffic from those banners. You are right Pamil, those banners are not really bringing in the result.
