Looking to get a better idea of who offers dedicated servers in the UK - whether standalone, semi-managed, or managed.

I can already think of a few places that offer dedicated servers - anyone wish to bring forward suggestions for a good list? Smiley

If I may ask, do you actually personally build or buy your own servers, or are you buying them through another company as a supplier? I'm encountered a few companies selling from Telehouse but I don't actually know who they might be re-selling for. Not that it would affect myself, as I wouldn't dare try to administrate a server yet. Smiley

There not resold. Servers are built by a company who specialise in doing so, the equipment is 100% owned by us.

Is there any real technical difference between a server and a normal home-owned PC? How about software?

Hardware wise there is a difference, we use 1U rackmounts, 1U being 1.75 inches in height.  Entry level server boards are used, no onboard sound for example.

Software also, you wouldnt run a server on XP Home Edition.  Your also want to be sure the box is secured, sometimes overlooked by home PC users.

Heh, there's also the command line environment to work in as well. Smiley

Tends not to be an issue with home PC's - certinaly not running Windows, anyway. Smiley
