Here's another invaluable tool I use: NotePad+

http://www.mypeecee.org/rogsoft/notepad.html

The default NotePad supplied by windows is very limited - not least in that it won't edit files of a certain size.

Here's something from the NotePad+ Readme:

Quote
NotePad+ is a free drop-in replacement for Windows 95/98/NT/2000 notepad, which eats standard notepad for lunch!

Features:

- No more file size barrier under Windows 95/98

- Opens multiple files

- MAPI enabled to send files through e-mail

- Drag-and-drop of selected text

- User-definable fonts & colors, Open- & Save dialogs Filters

- Smarter hot keys

- Numerous other improvements over standard notepad.
Apparently there are some very minor bugs for Win98 - which is what I use - but frankly I've never noticed any particular issue. This is simply a very handy file. Easy to install, too - simply swap the NotePad.exe files (though do follow the Installation Instructions in the Readme!

We use something called Notetab Light here, which I guess is a similar product.  It's nice to have something Notepad like, which is mucher quicker to launch than Word, but has a few extra features over plain, ol' boring default Notepad.

Is Notepad so basic so as not to impinge on the sales of Word, I wonder...?

I've started using dreamweaver to learn to build web pages. Will I need to use something like notepad lite and plus as well?

If you use Dreamweaver then you may not need Noetpad at all! However, it may be recommended to have an extended version, as like the two above. As to which is the btter - that's probably more a user call. Smiley

Metapad must be similar too...

Quote
metapad is a small, fast (and completely free) text editor for Windows 9x/NT/XP with similar features to Microsoft Notepad but with many extra (and rather useful) features. It was designed to completely replace Notepad since it includes all of Notepad's features and much, much more.

And thanks for the heads up on Metapad - looks very interesting. I may be trying that out later as well... Smiley
