I have been in business for a couple of years and have been content up to now with having a website as something to refer potential clients to in order to view some of our work. We now want to start using it as a tool to generate some business itself.

Now, before I begin, I guess I should give you some background. My husband and I run a multimedia design business (with the empahsis on the design) and we do create websites, so, "Why don't you know this already?" I hear you cry. Well, we both studied the same digital media degree, but were not taught a single thing about search engine optimisation. It was entirely a design driven course, which has resulted in us having great design minds but little 'net marketing knowhow. As you can imagine, we desperately need this, not only to market ourselves, but to be able to give clients what they need.

This is the site: www.avmsolutions.co.uk

So, I'm currently doing this:

1. Putting META keywords and descriptions on every page.

2. Changing the page titles, so that they describe what's on that page (previously, I had called every page AVM Solutions)

3. The broadband site is completely flash driven, so I am going to put text on the page further down, so that unless the viewer scrolls down the page, they won't be able to see it. At a later date, the site will be completely changed, so that the site is only partially flash driven.

4. On the first page which asks for the viewers connection speed, I am going to put a site map with text hyperlinks to every page.

My questions:

a) Is any of the above not worth doing?

b) Is there anything I'm not doing that I could be doing, preferably at little cost?

If you've read this far, thank you. Cheesy

One of the really basic aspects of the way search engines work (particularly Google) is that people find you by virtue of their search phrases matching the text on your site.

What little text content you have at present is deeply buried so you are to all intents and purposes invisible as far as a search engines are concerned.

It might help if you embrace the idea that your website needs to talk to your potential clients at many levels, and one of these levels should be to show that you can write good copy that draws visitors in.  And this needs to appear on your front page as well as internal pages.

If you also concentrate on building accessible, standards compliant web pages then you are also heading down the right road, because Google likes pages that are built in conformance with basic HTML standards.

Other than that, I would suggest you follow these guidelines and buy Brian's backlink service.  I haven't used his service yet but your site clearly lacks backlinks at present and it will give you a kickstart.  Also, if you buy a link from Business.com for $99 you will be doing yourself a favour.

If you don't mind a little reading, Sarah, then these articles will provide you with a lot of information to start with:

Firstly, a rather comprehensive article by Andy Beal on general SEO:
 http://www.seo-lab.com/seo-articles/seo-basics-1.php

Then here's a rather interesting article about applying SEO to optimise for Flash websites in particular:
 http://www.seochat.com/c/a/Search-Engine-Optimization/Optimizing-Flash/

Don't worry about not being having been taught SEO, though - it's something most certainly best leanred via experience than some know-all overcharging everybody for information you can get off the net for free. Cheesy

Feel free to ask any more specific questions - I appreciate that a lot of reading has been dumped on you - I'll see if I can help at least a little in trying to provide none too technical answers - as otherwise I'll probably get carried away. Smiley

You mention Flash... This may look good to users with fast internet use but for search engines it's not recomended.

Flash could be put on another page.
